Official inauguration
Over the past weeks, youngsters have already eagerly used the new court. In collaboration with GIGOS and Atlas Gym, the Genk Sportburen – local young sports volunteers – organized several activities. The festive inauguration on May 28 brought together local residents, partners, youths, and none other than Jan Vertonghen himself. The former Red Devil, who recently retired from professional football, opened the court with great enthusiasm:
“When I was young, I played outside for hours. That shaped me – as an athlete and as a person. With the Foundation, we want to give children the same freedom to play, move, and dream. This playground is a beautiful example of that.”
Interactive play wall
The undisputed eye-catcher is the interactive play wall. “It’s a modern take on the classic wall-kick game,” explains Alderman for Sport Kathleen Parthoens. The wall features sixteen light-up panels. With a single button press, players dive into games testing their speed, accuracy, and shot power.
Making movement fun
“By combining movement with playful tech, we make being active not just accessible, but truly fun,” Parthoens says. “Especially for youngsters who usually prefer gaming, this is a great nudge to go outside and be active.”
Creative play and exercise
The design supports classic ball sports like football and basketball but also invites creative movement for all ages. Two pétanque courts and additional parking spots were also added for larger events.
Lowering barriers
Together with Lappset, the multifunctional court was designed to make sport and play as accessible as possible for all young people in the neighborhood. “Sport should be for everyone,” says Parthoens. “This court lowers the barrier to movement and brings the community closer together.”
